Hello Section 0511!

• Diana Metzger, our 2021 Chair, has unfortunately had to resign for personal reasons and the Section is currently without a Chair. The Section thanks Diana for her service and we are sorry that she will be unable to continue in her role. What this means for the Section is that we are currently without a Section Chair, which is one of the offices that must be filled for a Section to remain in good standing and active within the ASQ structure. It is urgent that the office of Section Chair be filled as soon as possible in order to ensure the continuing existence of Section 0511 within ASQ. The Section by-laws require that two of the four of the four members of the Section Leadership Committee (Chair, Chair-elect, Treasurer, and Secretary), plus 25% of the Committee Chairs be present for a quorum. Currently, two of the four SLC positions are unfilled (Chair and Chair-elect), so we cannot have a quorum if the Secretary or the Treasurer are unable to attend a meeting, which is an additional handicap imposed by the situation.
• Accordingly, the topic of our Membership Meeting tonight will be to address unfilled offices within the Section. Any members interested in serving in the offices described below should contact our Nominations Committee Chair, Barbara McCullough, at nominating21@asq0511.org, or attend and state an intention to serve. As two of the positions are elected, members are encouraged to attend, comment, and vote even if they do not intend to fill a position. In addition to Section Chair, we have several other positions that need to be filled, these include Chair-elect and Programs Committee Chair. The duties of these positions are summarized below:
  • While the Section leadership includes several past chairs who could serve again, the offices of Section Chair and Chair-elect are elected offices and are open to all Section members who meet the qualifications. The duties of each vacant office are summarized below:
    • Section Chair — The Section Chair shall be the chief executive officer of the Section, and shall preside at all meetings of the Section and of the Section Executive Committee. The Chair shall appoint all standing and additional committees, and shall be an ex-officio member of all committees of the Section. The Chair shall represent the Section in all matters involving meetings or other contacts with other local, regional or national groups, or shall appoint an alternate.
    • Section Chair-Elect — The Section Chair-elect shall develop short-range plans for the year and develop the organization to implement the plan. In the absence of the Section Chair, the Section Chair-elect shall perform all the duties and shall be vested with all of the powers of the Section Chair.
    • Programs Committee Chair — Identify and recruit presenters for the monthly membership meetings. Coordinate with the Arrangements Chair to ensure that speaker needs (such as technical support) are met.
      Please note that “Programs” is a committee, not a person; if there are multiple members with an interest in serving as a committee member under a committee chair, this role can be well-served by a group, especially one composed of diverse fields and professional circles to draw on the largest possible pool of speaker candidates.
