Sunrise over gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a sign urges silence and respect

The Tour: ASQ Section 0511 is pleased to have arranged a private tour guide and a thirty-eight (38) person trolley for an approximate one and one half hour ride though the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, with stops to include changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and two additional stops to be determined (due to recent storm damage). Please allow enough time to travel, park, clear security, and meet at the Welcome Center. Due to the structure of the tour, late arrivals will not be accommodated, and the private guided educational tour and RUs would be forfeited without reimbursement.

The Venue: Arlington National Cemetery is one of two cemeteries in the US National Cemetery system. Established during the American Civil War, the land was confiscated from Confederate States Army general Robert E. Lee's family following a tax dispute. Under jurisdiction of the U.S. Army, and divided into seventy (70) sections, more than 400,000 individuals are buried within Arlington National Cemetery's 639 acres. Those lives and legacies represent service and sacrifice, innovation and perseverance, and the historical connections between the American military and society.

ANC offers many educational programs, tours, and honors including, but not limited to, African American History, Service Branches, Medal of Honor, Earth/Air/Space, WWII, Military Technology and Intelligence, Spanish-American War, the Arboretum, military funerals, and wreath laying.

Additional on-site memorials throughout the massive acreage include the USS Maine Mast memorial, near the Tomb of Unknowns, which commemorates the 266 men who died aboard the USS Maine; Space Shuttle Challenger’s memorial in memory of the crew of flight STS-51-L, who died during launch in January 1986; Lockerbie Cairn is a memorial to the 270 killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland with a similar memorial to those who died when the Shuttle Columbia broke apart during its 2003 reentry; section 64 houses a memorial to the 184 victims of the September 11 attacks on the Pentagon; the Cross of Sacrifice names US citizens who died fighting in the Canadian forces during World War I, with names of US citizens who died in Korean conflict and WWII added later; and the Laos memorial (Lao Veterans of America memorial), dedicated to Lao and Hmong veterans who served with US Special Forces and CIA advisors during the Vietnam War, located on Grant Avenue near the eternal flame memorial to U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

The App: ANC Explorer is a web-based and mobile application that enables families, visitors and the public to locate and receive directions to gravesites and other points of interest throughout the cemetery.

Etiquette: Speak quietly / do not damage or sit on monuments or gravestones / no pets / if you encounter a funeral procession, please step aside and wait for the procession to pass / respect the flag / no food and beverage but for water.

Entry Requirements: All visitors to ANC must present a valid U.S. state or federal government-issued photo identification; non U.S. citizens must present a valid passport or U.S. State Department-issued photo identification for entry.

Getting There: ANC is located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. at the end of Memorial Avenue, which extends from Memorial Bridge, accessible from the major roadways in the D.C. area: Interstate 95, the Capital Beltway (I-495), the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295).

The ANC parking facility, which opens at 8 am and closes promptly at 6 pm, is located at the main Memorial Avenue entrance, next to the Welcome Center, at a cost of $3 per hour, and a daily maximum of $12 a day for passenger vehicles. Approach in close proximity to the ticket machine for the sensor to recognize the vehicle and produce a ticket. Keep ticket with you as payment is required before exiting the garage. Payment stations accept cash and credit cards and are located inside the welcome center near the bookstore with another inside the mid-level of the parking garage just beyond the stairs. Upon payment, visitors have 30 minutes to exit. Lost ticket fee is $12. Pre-payment is available at Parking.com (if you opt to prepay for parking, do not take a ticket upon entry).
