Applying CMMIŽ Processes to Existing Software Development Projects

by
Joe Tullington

This presentation will provide some key ammunition to the Change Manager who has been tasked with "implement CMMI processes to the remaining projects by next Spring". Based on the results of a Masters degree in Software Engineering Administration research project, gain insights into approaches for phasing KPA implementations based on my research survey, and develop realistic timeframes for establishing inch-pebbles and milestones towards a successful implementation of CMMI processes in your other existing projects.

Joe Tullington is a "dyed in the wool" QA/tester, with over 21 years in the systems and software testing environment--initially as a hands-on, "let's go break some products" tester, up through managing multiple teams of testers. After completing a stint in the Army, Joe realized that the military communications systems were inadequate and needed to be updated. Since 1985, Joe has been working on software and systems development contracts for the Federal Government--primarily DoD (Army, Navy and Joint-Services), but also with the INS and HHS. Throughout this time Joe has noticed a trend among companies that completed CMM (or CMMI) assessments--although the company was assessed at CMMI Level 3, the institutionalizing of processes throughout the organization was inconsistent at best.

For his Masters degree research project, Joe attempted to determine why some companies succeeded in applying CMMI processes while others companies failed--after these companies had been assessed at CMMI Level 3. Joe Tullington has a Masters of Science in Software Engineering Administration, has been an ASQ Certified Software Quality Engineer since 1998, and is also a member of the International Test and Evaluation Association.
