What You Need To Know About SCAMPI
by
Dr. Sue J. Worden
Synopsis
A CMMI appraisal can be one of the most value-added process improvement activities you
undertake. However, even high maturity organizations may struggle through an
appraisal and fail to realize a return on investment. Appraisals are expensive,
time-consuming, and disruptive. The investment is substantial -- before, during, and
after the appraisal. A key step towards recouping that investment is understanding
the "rules of engagement", that is, the mechanics and dynamics of the Standard CMMI
Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI). When participating staff
understand the "rules", their interactions with the appraisal team are more efficient
and more likely to yield insights that will translate into concrete, actionable
process improvements of greater value to your organization.
Dr. Sue J. Worden holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and MS and PhD degrees in
Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas. Her 30-year
professional career has spanned a broad range of environments and challenges, from the
textile industry factory floor to the college classroom, from underwater acoustics to
orbital mechanics, from embedded software development to project management.
She is currently a Principal Systems Engineer at BAE Systems, Network Enabled
Solutions, in Reston, Virginia. Her current focus is engineering development and
management process improvement. She has recently served on several CMMI appraisal
teams.
When she is not working or commuting from Warrenton, she enjoys educational outreach,
amateur astronomy, and the leadership and communication skills development fellowship
of Toastmasters International.
