Notes:
CREATE FLIPCHART: When you are in the listener’s shoes, what gets in your way of being able to truly listen?
Distractions—what are some distractions that get in the way of listening effectively
Judgment—disliking the person who is speaking; rejecting statements that are too radical of a departure from your own thinking
Having too many other things on our minds.
Disagreeing with the message
Jumping to conclusions/readying an answer before the sender is done
Deciding that there is nothing in it for me (WIIFM)/not important
Do the Headband exercise.
Or, do the interview process--pairs--listener and speaker--listener does nothing but listen actively; speaker takes 30 seconds to talk about a hobby or an interest that they have outside of work. Then listener is given 90 seconds to ask questions. Switch roles and then ask: 1. Was the role of talker or listener easier for you? 2. In listening role did you notice any good or bad habits that you have--eye contact, interrupting? 3. In the listener role did you feel that you had control or was there none? In reality, the listener has all of the control for the direction of the conversation. 4. Did the 90 seconds go faster or slower than you thought it had been? 5. Did you listen more effectively in the exercise than you do in real life?
