The Quality Journey to Mount Rainer
Nicholas Wulfekuhle, Serco Inc
Short Narrative/Description:
At 14,410 feet, Mt. Rainier is the highest glaciated peak in the continental United States. Annually, 10,000 people attempt to summit Rainier. 5,000 succeed. This discussion will retrace a successful climb, the elements that define success, and how quality principles play into determining not only success, but overall enjoyment and appreciation of what can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience or a catalyst to go even higher in search of greater achievement.
Speaker Background:
- Nick Wulfekuhle, PMP, is a Program Manager for Serco, Inc. His quality management experience includes five years supporting the Navy’s Submarine Safety Program where he worked with Navy engineers to define systems testing and certification policy for systems installed on new submarine classes. He has applied this experience to projects he has managed for clients in every Cabinet-Level agency.
- When he turned 47, his Doctor told him to get in shape or risk having to “start taking medications that old people take.” Upon loosing 50 lbs., he needed motivation to keep the weight off and started running road races for the first time since high school – culminating in successful completion of the Marine Corps Marathon. As running started taking its toll on his now 50 year-old joints, he decided to pursue the one adventure he had dreamed of completing since he was 5 years old – to stand at the top of Mount Rainier. He still works. He still climbs.
