The Red Bead Experiment
Rip Stauffer
Short Narrative/Description:
- Did you ever wonder why many of the “tried-and-true” management strategies just don’t seem to work on a lot of your problems? Ever wondered why performance evaluation systems seem to go through a lot of changes, but never seem to get any better or more effective? Have you ever thought that data-based management sounds like a good idea, but you weren’t really sure how it might help or apply to you? Maybe you haven’t had this experience, but you work for someone who has (in that case, invite that manager to the meeting).
- In this presentation, Rip Stauffer will present W. Edwards Deming’s famous Red Bead Experiment, a production simulation that Dr. Deming used in all his four-day seminars to introduce the concepts of systems thinking, understanding variation, theory of knowledge and psychology—the four cornerstones of the System of Profound Knowledge. It’s a highly-interactive and fun exercise that has challenged the assumptions of workers, managers and executives alike. The exercise itself calls for several “willing workers” from the audience, so be prepared to roll up your sleeves and do some quality work!
- We’ll follow the demonstration with a group discussion on the lessons from the Red Bead.
