Enhancing Your Management System

Short Narrative/Description:

• The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has recently announced the formation of the Project Committee (PC) 283, Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements. The Project Committee is tasked with transforming the Occupational Health Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS 18001) specification into an ISO standard. The Project Committee is chaired by British Standards Institute; the first meeting is expected to be held on 21-25 October 2013 in London, United Kingdom.
• Currently there are two popular options for integrating safety into an organization’s management system; the above noted international consensus speciation OHSAS and the US ANSI Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems safety standard –ANSI Z10-2012. The Project Committee is expected to make quick work of redrafting the existing OHSAS 18001 specification with potentially publication of the new ISO standard as early as 2016. Mr. Thoms will present the advantages and disadvantages of the current options and strategies for best preparing for the anticipated release of the ISO safety standard in 2016.

Speaker Background:

Mr. Thoms is founder and Principal Consultant with Wolf Management Systems. He is a former ISO 9001/14001 Lead Auditor and has over twenty years of environmental, safety and quality management experience. Mr. Thoms served as Quality and Safety Manager for one of the area’s Top 100 Defense Contractors and most recently served as the Program Manager for the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Voluntary Protection Programs Center of Excellence. Clients include major DoD installations as well as private sector clients.

Reservations: Cost for dinner is $30.00 per person if reservations are made by the deadline (the Friday before the meeting), $35 if otherwise. There is no charge to attend for the presentation only.
